Memorial Day 2024 Severe Weather
FRANKFORT, Ky. - On May 26, 2024, the Kentucky Emergency Management State Emergency Operation Center was activated to level 3 with all state partners in response to storms and tornadoes across the Commonwealth. A total of 15 tornadoes and numerous straight-line winds hit Kentucky, resulting in six weather-related fatalities and power outages affecting 215,144 people. Pennyrile State Park in Christian County began sheltering survivors within hours of the storm's outbreak in the west. In response, 28 counties and 12 cities declared a state of emergency. The Commonwealth has requested a federal declaration but it has not been approved at this time.
